tandem vs single axles

just came back from a 1000 mile trip in new tt, I thought I had sway control built into my w/d hitch but they were a lot of white knuckled truck passes. I think I want to move up to a tandem axle and probably a v-8. I current have a 16' single pulled by a v-6 nissan or my 4 cyl diesel jeep. Do the tandem units handle better on the road?

Lake Placid, NY

Just came back from Lake Placid, stayed at probably the nicest campground I have ever camped in. It was a KOA in Lake Placid. It had full cable, wi-fi in our rv, and probably the nicest view of the mountains this side of the Mississippi. Fantastic fall leaf colors and even a bit of snow one nite. I did learn a few things, like if you leave your stove vent unlatched while towing it will disappear. I also ran into a couple of rubber highway construction markers, they can do a job to your undercarriage-bent my steps!! I also realized I need a sway control, some of the truck passes were white knuckled. All in all, a wonderful week.

RE: battery charging 24/7

I just checked my trailer, my model is WFCO converter #8955PEC and it has 3 modes, absorption, bulk, and float. So it appears I may be ok letting it stay plugged in full time.

battery charging 24/7

Is it a problem leaving your battery hooked up while you are plugged over a period of months? How long a period of non use before you should disconnect? I can take the battery out or leave it in the tt, but I plug in my unit and I have a dehumidifier running during non use. I have been leaving the battery live during periods of non use, it's a new unit with all new converter and battery. Will the converter dry out the battery, I thought it had a trickle charge built in?

RE: extended warranties

Let me say that the extended warranty for the refer was $120 and for the a/c another $180 for a total of $300 for both. Does this change anyone's opinion? I'd say $180 to insure $900 is not bad, it's certainly not earning any interest in the bank!!!

RE: extended warranties

this is from Dometic, an OEM with whom I registered my product after dealer purchase. Now they offer an"extension" and I'm debating the offer.

extended warranties

are extended warranties wise on new appliances. Dometic wants $300 to double their standard 3 year to 6 full years parts/labor on my reefer and a/c. Do problems normally occur after 3 years? this is my first tt purchase so I have no historical reference. thanx

adding a 12v circuit

I'm contemplating a purchase of a heat pad for my one exposed tank and wondering how to add a circuit to my 55 amp converter. I will run the wires underneath but I have no idea how to access nor attach it to my converter. It's built into the wall, next to the refer, under a closet. Any pictures would be helpful, thanx

good question, my converter is 55 amps, I assume it will keep my battery charged?

does everyone want an Airstream?

I recently acquired a 2009 Sunvalley Roadrunner, an entry level 16' tt. I have always liked Airstream trailers and now understand why they cost 3 times what I paid for my tt. They are well built, well appointed, and have everything. Now I'm thinking, I'm not getting younger, I could afford an Airstream (I'd have to sell my Harley and tradein the 09 tt plus another $10k cash) would get me a 19' Airstream. Does everyone else want or wish they could have an Airstream, are they the best of the best? They are 4 season trailers and hold their value, my money is only making 4% in the bank, why not enjoy it? What are your opinions?

holding tanks

I just checked my new tt and it appears that only my gray water tank is exposed. My freshwater is under the front dinette and my black water being only 9 gallons is under the toilet in the bathroom. So, in order to use in the winter, it appears all I have to do is purchase some heat tape for the sewer pipes/elbows and a pad for the gray tank. Should I try to enclose the gray tank as well as attach a heat pad, or enclose in lieu of? How do I hook the 12 volt pads to my system, do I install another circuit, take apart my converter panel, is this hard to do. Or do I try to tap into an existing circuit, there are all kinds of wires running to the gray tank, some are sensor wires?

RE: trip planning freedom

Some of you mention " calling around", where do you get these phone numbers and how do you locate these fairgrounds some mention? Is there a directory of the private campgrounds? I have Woodalls and am ordering the Good Sam cd set. I guess it's like standing on the edge of the pool, just jump in and start swimming. Thanks everyone for their HO's.

trip planning freedom

I have always made cg reservations in the past but always felt I was on a "schedule", if I liked a place I could not stay, if I did not like a place I was stuck, and side trips were not an option. I'm tired of staying in 4 KOA's for a week's trip.
What I'm interested in is "freedom", being able to drive and stop when I want to and not be on a schedule. I had this feeling while riding my motorcycle on a trip, other than gas, I was free to enjoy what I saw and if I could not find a room when I got tired I slept on the ground next to my bike. Now I have a RV and the capability to be self contained with a generator but I need some guidance. What preparations do other's make on a 10-14 day rv trip, other than picking a destination. How do you drive and stop when and where you want? How do you get that freedom feeling back?

RE: first trip out - what was on your "bring next time" list?

matches and at least 2 butane lighters for the h/w pilot, broom to sweep off rugs and awning, umbrella, weather radio, extra leash for the dog, maps (used before gps were invented) paper plates and coffee filters

RE: traveling with items in fridge

if you look at your door you will see that most door shelves line up just where the metal rack is so once the door is closed and latched things should stay on the shelves enroute

draining water heater

do I need to drain the tt h/w in season while not in use? Will this stop any rust issues or does the anode rod handle that?
